Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso has said that his former teammate Steven Gerrard will manage the club someday.
He admits that current coach Jurgen Klopp is excellent in the role but adds that the former Red skipper is destined to manage the club sometime in the future.
The Bayern Munich star said that he was elated that Gerrard agreed to return to the club after he was handed a coaching role at the club’s academy. Alonso says Gerrard made a wise decision to manage the academy upon retiring from active football in the MLS. He said it was wiser that he did not jump straight at professional club management but through the academy.
“I think it’s good for him to take it little by little and to gain experience. I don’t know when but someday I believe he will manage Liverpool. I think he will. He has the credentials.
“I think he’s smart enough and intelligent enough to make that transition and to prepare himself for whenever he thinks he’s ready to try it,” the Spaniard said.
Alonso opined that the required knowledge and charisma are prerequisites for the role of Liverpool manager. He said Gerrard already has the charisma and that when he gets the required knowledge, then he would make a good manager of the Kop.
Alonso hailed Klopp, saying the German tactician has a “great knowledge” of the game. He said Klopp was now “an important figure” at Anfield.
Liverpool have truly being impressive this term. They have done so against the top six and seem to be set for an automatic Champions League spot at the end of the season.
Alonso has had a great career with Liverpool, Real Madrid and now Bayern Munich. He is also revered in the international scene. He is set to retire anytime soon.
