During the last few matches of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard has been deployed into a new position which is partly due to the injury that Lucas Leiva sustained and now the English captain is being placed as a holding midfielder instead of his usual attacking minded spot in the pitch.
Earlier in the month of January during Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa, Gerrard seemed to struggle trying to adapt into his new role but in their next encounter which was against Everton it was a completely different match for Gerrard as he was much more comfortable and even scored the opening goal of the game.
According to Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard has silenced his critics.
Rodgers said: “If anyone ever questioned whether Steven Gerrard can play as a controlling midfielder then he put on one of the best performances I’ve seen for a long, long time.
“I thought he was sensational in that role – opening up the game from behind, his exhibition in blocking, when he marked space, when he marked a man. He controlled the game and it was wonderful.”
Following the 4-0 triumph of Liverpool against Everton, Gerrard told the club’s official website about what it feels like playing on a position for his team and he is confident that with time and work, he can improve much more and get things right.
“It’s a different position to the one that I’ve played for the last 12 or 15 years.
“Previously, I’ve been trying to get from box to box. But the new role is more about control and organizing the people in front of me.I know that with time and work on the training pitch, I can get it right because I believe I can play in a number of positions.” Gerrard wrote on Liverpool’s website.
